Pilates Strengthens the Brain

Having a strong core enables us to “Stand Taller, Look Slimmer and Feel Healthier, according to ADVANCE for Physical Therapists & PT Assistants. In the May 18th, 2009 issue, they documented that there are three different power cores to consider in any exercise program: the Global Core (outermost abdominals), the Deep Core (pelvic floor muscle), and the Deepest Core (the brain). The deepest core is the autonomic nervous system. This is a part of our brain that sends messages to our muscles and tells them what to do. Including messages that tell the muscles they need balance and strength during our daily activities. Thus, balance and strength start from the Deepest Core and then progresses to the Deep Core then the Global Core in an outward fashion. The brain must be our strongest signal! Prior to our bodies initiating a movement, the brain sends a signal to our muscles that enables them to change alignment, move through space, and maintain tone.

The basic principles of pilates help to engage the ANS! The breathing activities performed that encourage diaphragmatic breathing help strengthen those signals to our muscles, providing the key element in achieving, “optimal core strength and efficient human function”. At S2S, we will educate you on both strengthening the abdomen and pelvic floor through diaphragmatic breathing!
